MOBY DICK: The novel recounts the account of sailor Ishmael in the obsessive search of Ahab, the captain of the whaling ship Pequod, for vengeance against Moby Dick, the enormous white sperm whale who bit off Ahab’s leg at the knee on the ship’s previous expedition.

It was a contribution to American Renaissance literature, but it wasn’t until the 20th century, following the centennial of its author’s birth, that it gained recognition as a Great American Novel.

D. H. Lawrence considered it the best book about the sea ever written and one of the oddest and most wonderful books in the entire universe. William Faulkner expressed his wish that he had written the book himself. One of the most famous starting lines in all of literature is “Call me Ishmael.”
